Rotary and the Internet
Rotary International's commitment to fight internet fraud

The Internet abounds with useful information. Unfortunately, it is also riddled with fraudulent offers and schemes. Though scams come in may guises, including traditional mail, e-mail is one of the most frequently abused means by which perpetrators contact their victims. Offers of opportunities to transfer money into a special account are among the most typical cases. Internet users pay dearly for so-called pyramid schemes, letter of credit fraud, and other forms of illegal activity; the Internet Fraud complaint Center reports that e-mail and Web page freaud account for a total dollar loss of about US$17.8 million.

Some Rotarians have expressed concern about the privacy of their contact information. Rotary International would like to assure all Rotarians that their private information, including e-mail addresses, is secure. TI goes to great lengths to ensure the security of personal data and does not publish or divulge e-mail addresses or any other information to third parties.

The Official Directory, which includes e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, and other sensitive date, is not available on the Internet and must be ordered by Rotarians. The Official Directory cannot be used as a commercial mailing list and Rotary club members should take care to make sure it is not possible for anyone else to use it for this purpose.

However, Despite these efforts to preserve privacy, on very rare occasions, printed material such as the Official Directory may fall into the wrong hands. In such cases, perpetrators of fraud schemes then gain access to sensitive data of Rotarians. Rotary International urges Rotarians to exercise caution with organizational references such as the Official Directory.

The Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) is a site where visitors can file complaints and read about Internet fraud.
